Ma Yanhong (simplified Chinese: 马燕红; traditional Chinese: 馬燕紅; pinyin: Mǎ Yànhóng; born March 21, 1964, in Beijing, China) (also reported in some media as July 5, 1963) [1] is a retired Chinese Olympic athlete. She was the first Chinese gymnast, male or female, to win a gold medal at the World Gymnastics Championships and the Olympic Games. [2]

At the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, Ma became the first Chinese female gymnast to win an Olympic title, when she tied Julianne McNamara for the gold medal on uneven bars. Both gymnasts scored a perfect 10.0 in the final.

In 2008, Ma Yanhong made history as the first Chinese woman inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame. She remains an icon in Chinese gymnastics, inspiring generations of young athletes.

Ma Yanhong is simply put, a legend. Not only was she the first star gymnast to emerge out of the Chinese program, Ma Yanhong was the first gymnast to break Eastern Europe’s stranglehold on the sport.

Yanhong is known for her realistic portraits of young people, where she juggles with the intimacy of the subjects in the painting and the interest of the viewer, so there is a balance between voyeurism and exhibitionism in those seemingly quotidian scenes.

She began to attend regular gymnastics training when she was 9 years old and entered the national team in 1978.
