The M88A1 was powered by the Continental AVDS-1790-2DR Diesel engine and had a 10 hp (7.5 kW) Diesel auxiliary power unit. [ 1 ] While the original M88 and M88A1 are designated as a "medium recovery vehicle", the M88A2 (original designation M88A1E1) is designated as "heavy recovery vehicle".

In 1975, the M88E1 was officially serialized as the M88A1. Of the original production of 1,075 vehicles produced by BMY, 878 were built to A1 with production ending in 1982. In 1989, 2,167 new M88A1s were built. The M88A1 entered service with the US military in the late 1980s.
