It features a monocoque armoured v-hull, for maximized interior space, seats and footrests suspended from the ceiling, run-flat tires, and an optional armored glass turret (Gunner Protection Kit or GPK), for maximized visibility and protection. The monocoque hull does not extend under the engine like some other armoured vehicles.

The M1238A1 RG-33A1 Special Operations Command (SOCOM) 4x4 Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicle is very similar to its predecessor, the M1238 RG33 SOCOM MRAP, but with some upgrades. The most notable upgrade is the addition of Oshkosh Defense's TAK-4 Independent Suspension System.

To increase the vehicles' mobility, they were quickly upgraded with the TAK-4 Independent Suspension System and those vehicles are referred to as the M1238A1 SOCOM MRAP.

BAE Systems manufactured three of the US Marine Corps' five variants of MRAP vehicles: the Caiman, the RG31 and the RG33. The RG33 series is in the medium weight class, providing survivability, advanced mobility, mission flexibility, rapid availability and vehicle commonality.

The MRAP is a Military Light Tactical Vehicle designed specifically to withstand Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attacks and Ambushes. Common features include an impenetrable armored Crew Survivability Capsule, seperation of fuel and powertrain from the crew and angular surfaces on the underside of the crew capsule to deflect blast waves.

The RG-33 Mine-Resistant Ambush-Protected vehicle (MRAP) is a 4x4 mine-protected armored vehicle. The special operations variant of the RG-33 has been used by SOCOM units since Summer 2008 and has been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Surprisingly, only approximately 36 of the “base” RG-33 4x4 vehicles were ever built. However, its only specialized variant produced, the M1238 RG-33 4x4 Special Operations Command (SOCOM) Vehicle, was manufactured in much larger numbers.

The BAE Systems RG-33 Special Operations Command (SOCOM) Armored Utility Variant (AUV) MRAP is a modified Commercial Off-The-Shelf vehicle designed from the ground up to reduce casualties and increase survivability for personnel subjected to mine explosions, improvised explosive device (IED) detonations and small arms fire.
