LXQt was born between the collaboration of the RazorQT desktop and the LXDE team. As I said, LXDE creator didn't liked GTK3, so they started to experiment with Qt, the other toolkit used in Linux, by remaking LXDE but with Qt. The fusion of that project and RazorQt gave birth to LXQt. It is quite similar to LXDE but a bit "refreshed".

Oct 25, 2023 · It first started with only a file manager, PCManFM, but then evolved into more apps that comprise a full desktop environment. When GTK3 came out, Hong didn't liked it, so he instead started to port LXDE to use the Qt graphical toolkit instead of GTK2. Another desktop trying to do the same, Razor-Qt, joined forces with Hong, and the result is LXQt.

I have a LXQt setup where I use autorandr instead of lxqt-config-monitor to setup my displays, mainly because I find it way easier to use it to save/detect/switch multiple display profiles. So I replace the autostart .desktop file of lxqt-config-monitor with one that runs autorandr instead.

Mar 23, 2023 · If you choose KWin as your default WM, then yeah, I guess it'd be slightly chunkier than lxde (default is Openbox). But what if you choose Openbox as your default WM for LXQt? Without any proper testing or benchmarking, I'd take a gander and say that Openbox LXQt and Openbox LXDE are about the same. I'd never use LXDE.

Dec 30, 2020 · LXQt, though a DE, it doesn't include a DE shel, like Gnome and KDE do, which might be not so good for some, because then changing environment variables affecting all windows and applications might require reloading the DE, but it's something else less consuming some resources as well...

Jul 30, 2023 · That effort combined with the team of Razor-QT (another lightweight desktop) lead to LXQt, a rewrite of the entire of LXDE but with Qt. Altough PCMan and the rest of the LXDE efforts moved to LXQt, some people (mainly from Arch Linux) are keeping LXDE alive, with even a port to GTK 3 in process. In the other hand we have Xfce.

Mar 7, 2022 · LXQt also works well on Debian (which has a LTS too; though like Ubuntu it doesn't cover all packages so I'd consider that if 5 years of security matters to you; but you're using Linux Mint already so security isn't your highest priority I gather) Lubuntu with LXQt uses openbox as it's WM. Debian with LXQt will use xfwm4 as it's WM.

Jul 15, 2019 · Lxqt is probably slightly more lightweight due to its LXDE roots. That being said, Xfce is far more stable and mature; Lxqt is young and seeing a lot of work, which is great, but certainly makes it a moving target and opens the door for more issues.
