World Lupus Day serves to call attention to the impact that lupus has on people around the world. The annual observance focuses on the need for improved patient healthcare services, increased research into the causes of and cure for lupus, earlier diagnosis and treatment of lupus, and better epidemiological data on lupus globally.

The World Lupus Federation invites everyone around the world to participate in the annual observance of World Lupus Day. A global health problem, lupus affects people of all nationalities, races, ethnicity, gender and age.

Since 2004 and led by the World Lupus Federation, lupus organizations around the globe have conducted activities on May 10 to raise awareness and educate the public about the symptoms and health effects of lupus.

On May 10, 2024, the global lupus community came together once again to raise awareness and make lupus visible. People worldwide wore purple, shared personal stories, engaged policymakers, spread lupus facts and awareness materials on social media, and illuminated buildings in purple.

The Lupus Foundation of America estimates that at least five million people worldwide, have a form of lupus. Lupus strikes mostly women of childbearing age. However, men, children, and teenagers develop lupus, too.

Day on which lupus organizations around the globe call attention to the need for increases in public and private sector funding for medical research on lupus, education programs for health professionals and patients, and improved access to quality medical care for people with lupus.
