Dec 25, 2024 · Over at the Emacs subreddit, ArcanistCheshire tells us that building Emacs with the Lucid toolkit resulted in an impressive Emacs speedup. This is seconded by Karthink, someone who has shown he knows what he’s talking about.

If Emacs is compiled with the X toolkit support using Lucid widgets, you can use X resources to customize the appearance of the menu bar (see The Menu Bar), pop-up menus, and dialog boxes (see Using Dialog Boxes).

May 7, 2024 · I'm not sure if switching to the Lucid toolkit will be more performant, but all the advice I see online seems to encourage its use in daemon mode. However, I'm worried about losing a little functionality like viewing HTML mail in mu4e and similar.

Jun 16, 2017 · The Lucid Widget Library (AKA lwlib) is an X11 widgets toolkit developed at Lucid Inc (1984-1994), similar to GTK+ (1998). There were a bunch of applications that used it. But, Lucid went out of business, and most software using the Lucid Widget Library died, and Lucid Widget Library pretty much died. Except that it was supported by GNU Emacs!

An emacs-pretest package is already available in AUR. It's build with GTK, however. For Lucid build, you may apply the below reverse patch to the PKGBUILD of emacs-lucid AUR package — the package that this comment belongs to.

1.2 Lucid Emacs. Lucid Emacs was developed by the (now-defunct) Lucid Inc., a maker of C++ and Lisp development environments. It began when Lucid decided they wanted to use Emacs as the editor and cornerstone of their C++ development environment (called “Energize”).
