Oct 27, 2021 · IBM and Quantum last week announced they have entered into a partnership to jointly develop the next generation of Linear Tape-Open (LTO) technology, LTO-10, which is currently under development and likely will come to market in 2024 or 2025.

LTO-9 and LTO-10 will offer transfer rates of 708 Mbps and 1,100 Mbps, respectively. The current generation, LTO-6, provides a native transfer rate of 160 Mbps, while LTO-7 will offer 315.2 Mbps and LTO-8 will offer 472 Mbps.

The LTO consortium has set the new generation guidelines at 62.5 TB for LTO-9 and 120 TB for LTO-10. According to Joel Tax of the Santa Clara Research Group, “The production of six generations of drives and a well defined term road map are key elements for the success of LTO.”
