Common Loons are one of my FAVORITE water birds found in Nebraska. These gorgeous birds are insanely strong and fast swimmers and routinely catch fish in high-speed underwater chases.

May 1, 2018 · There are 31 accepted records, most in the brief period 26 Oct-25 Nov, and all but nine in the east. The fall of 1996 saw an unprecedented influx of Red-throated Loons, accounting for four of the 22 records. By far the latest record is of a juvenile on the Lake McConaughy CBC 2 Jan 2016. There is a report fall ca 1899 Frontier Co (Swenk 1933).

Loons swim well and fly adequately, but are almost hopeless on land, because their legs are placed towards the rear of the body. Four species have been recorded in Nebraska.

For instance, the common loon is mostly found in eastern Nebraska during spring and fall. Whereas the great Blue heron inhabits the western and central part of the state. The double-crested cormorant mainly thrives in northern and western Nebraska.

May 1, 2018 · Pacific Loon was formerly considered a North American subspecies of the Arctic Loon, G. arctica, but they are now considered to be distinct species (AOU 1998). We consider Nebraska records to be of pacifica, as indicated by Mollhoff (1987), although it is possible that arctica could occur in Nebraska (see Comments).
