Livonian (Livonian: līvõ kēļ or rāndakēļ) is a Finnic language whose native land is the Livonian Coast of the Gulf of Riga, located in the north of the Kurzeme peninsula in Latvia but also used to be spoken in the Salaca River valley.

The Livonian alphabet has 39 letters. The diacritical marks have the same meaning as in Latvian. A long vowel is written with a macron or straight line ( ā, ǟ, ē, ī, ō, ȱ, ȭ, ū ) and a palatalized or “soft” consonant is written with a comma ( ḑ, ļ, ņ, ŗ, ț ).

Livonian has eight vowels: i, õ, u, e, ȯ, o, ä, a. All these vowels can be short and long. In the table, Livonian vowels are presented according to the tongue movement in the mouth: In East Livonian, the distinction between long mid, and low back rounded vowels ō and ǭ (no orthographic distinction!) can be made, e.g., lōda ‘table’, tǭla ‘winter’.
