The lithosphere–asthenosphere boundary (referred to as the LAB by geophysicists) represents a mechanical difference between layers in Earth's inner structure. Earth's inner structure can be described both chemically (crust, mantle, and core) and mechanically.

In general, the Earth can be divided into layers based on chemical composition and physical characteristics. Figure 2.2.1 2.2. 1: The layers of the Earth. Physical layers include the lithosphere and asthenosphere; chemical layers are crust, mantle, and core. Certainly, the earth is composed of countless combinations of elements.

The lithosphere is the brittle crust and uppermost mantle. The asthenosphere is a solid but it can flow, like toothpaste. The lithosphere rests on the asthenosphere.
