The IA2 assault rifle, designed and built in Brazil by IMBEL, is designed to replace the FAL, M16A2 and HK33 currently in service with the Brazilian Armed Forces.

May 17, 2017 · As delivered, the rifles had a 453mm barrel, an overall length of 1030 mm (764mm, stock folded), and a loaded weight of 4.85kg with 30-rounds in the STANAG-compatible magazine that had, inevitably, replaced the earlier proprietary type.

The basic rifle has received a 1:7-inch pitch barrel (6 grooves, RH twist) in place of the original 5.56x45mm IA2 1:10-inch unit (same rifling), while the stock fitted is of the foldable and adjustable type, which slightly reduces the gun’s length in both the extended and folded configurations.

Jul 27, 2017 · Following a recent firing incident with a 5.56x45mm IA2 semi-auto carbine in LE training use in Brazil, IMBEL – Indústria de Material Bélico do Brasil has issued an official recommendation note covering two aspects of the weapon’s operation.

Mar 18, 2022 · Brazil’s IMBEL have completed and delivered the first batch of new 7.62x51mm IA2 rifles. The batch of 50 rifles will be delivered to the Brazilian Army’s Army Evaluation Center (CAEx) for extensive testing.

May 5, 2023 · The IA2 is a selective-fire family of rifles that comes in various sizes and calibers. The original FAL was a 7.62 NATO rifle but it was also made in 5.56mm. While both variants feature folding stocks, optics rails, and modular handguards, they do differ.

The 7.62x51mm was introduced in the British army together with the L1A1 rifle (the British version of the FN FAL rifle) and the L4A1 (the 7.62 version of the Brengun) which was later replaced by the L7A2 machine gun (the Brittish version of the M.A.G.)
