Among the currently recognized taxa in the genus, L. ahaetulla constitutes a morphologically diverse assemblage of typically slender snakes, with subspecies recorded from Mexico to most of South America.
Leptophis santamartensis is considered a junior synonym of L. ahaetulla occidentalis (Albuquerque et al. 2012). Listed as Least Concern in view of its wide distribution, its population is presumed to be stable, is present in several protected areas and because there are no major threats affecting its population.
