Leon Bibel (1913–1995) was a Polish-born American painter and printmaker during the Great Depression. His themes were the social condition of workers and the politics of protest and war, although cityscapes and landscapes were included among his works.

Leon Bibel was born in 1913. He studied at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco and in 1936, at the height of the Depression, he came to New York City, hoping to work in the WPA Federal Art Project.

Bibel, an avowed leftist in a time of political turmoil, apparently held the institutions of justice in low regard. The witness on the stand almost literally airs his dirty laundry while the judge naps.
