At the end of the day it's entertainment. Have you read the manga? The Shishigumi are heavily explored and they go into the idea of how strong lions really are. You gotta also remember that Legosi is extremely driven by Haru. We know in this world that your instincts can give you a significant boost in power level.

I think a fine ending would've been Legoshi and Haru walking back, under that same sun they had years ago. Legoshi and her just share a glance, and it ends with him giving a slight wily smile. I feel that the narrative just needed more time with them.

What I mean is that two things can be true at the same time, they are not necessarily incompatible. Legoshi tries his best to not become a monster and this conflict lasts throughout the whole story, all because he really doesn't want to kill Haru at all, with his rational mind at least.
