XXI Rapax was one of the five legions used by Drusus to suppress the rebellion of the Raetians, in 16–15 BC. From 15 BC, the legion was stationed in Castra Regina ( Regensburg ), in the new province of Raetia .

Dura Europas Scutum, c. 250 AD: Curved rectangle c. 41"x33", quite deep, with square corners. Three layers of wood strips totalling 1/4" thick overall. Wood back bracing, "half-round", middle horizontal brace thickened to form grip.

The Hungarian Legio XXI Rapax reenactment unit was founded by M. Caecilius Metellus Tocaiensis in 2002. The legion soon became popular in Eastern and Central Hungary, as the first Roman reenactment legion in these areas, and later it developed to be most active group in Nova Roma worldwide.
