Walks start either from Moana, a little town on the northern edge of Lake Brunner, or at the southern end near Lake Brunner Lodge. Explore short lakeside trails or launch out on a hilly day hike, discover pristine rainforest, languid reflections, glowworms and an impressive waterfall.

Walk round Lake Brunner, then dense forest to Bain Bay where there are remains of tramways and other historic equipment. The track winds up through forest to reach a waterfall on Carew Creek. Enjoy the view from sitting on immense water-shaped granite boulders. Lake Brunner is famous for its renowned brown trout.

Lake Brunner offers a variety of walks, from short, family-friendly trails to more challenging hikes for the adventurous traveler. Each track provides a unique opportunity to experience the diverse landscapes, from serene lakeshores to dramatic alpine views.

Adjacent to the lake and the Arnold River Kotuku Awa that drains it are six walking tracks and two routes ranging in duration from 20 minutes to 8 hours. Tracks and viewpoints along them provide an appreciation of geology, landforms, botany, birdlife and human history.

The Trail is being constructed through the pristine native forest on the Western shore of Lake Brunner. The trail will link the township of Moana to the settlement of Mitchells at the Southern end of the lake, and then onto Kumara where it will link with the West Coast Wilderness Trail.

Mar 24, 2025 · The Bain Bay Walk is located in Mitchells on the southern shore of Lake Brunner in the West Coast region. It's a lovely short track from Mitchell to Bain Bay. This track follows the shoreline of Lake Brunner, so the water level can make it impassable if high.
