The George Hastings family donated 40 acres to the City of La Plata. In 1932, a group of citizens came up with the idea to build a golf course on the land. 6 holes were laid out and mowed with push-types mowers.

In the Spring of 1968, the Library was moved to its present location on the North side of the square. 1971, the City Council took over the financial management of the now tax supported Library. In recent years it has become one of the best genealogical libraries in northeast Missouri.
