Khulʿ (Arabic: خلع [xʊlʕ]), also called khula, is a procedure based on traditional jurisprudence, that allows a Muslim woman to initiate a divorce [1] by returning the mahr and everything she received from him during their life together, or without returning anything, as agreed by the spouses or judge's decree, depending on the circumstances.

In the time of the Prophet (SAWS), the wife of Thabit b. Qais requested the Prophet for a divorce from her husband. The Prophet asked her to return the garden given to her at the time of marriage as dower (Mahr). She accepted this condition and the marriage was dissolved.

In Islamic legal terminology, khula means that the wife demands the dissolution of the marriage, and the husband agrees to release her from the marriage in exchange for compensation. The compensation can either be the full dowry (mahr) or a lesser amount, which the husband agrees to, and in return, the wife is freed from the marriage contract.
