Sep 4, 2010 · LVM are useful in situations when you need to create/resize/remove partitions while the machine is running with programs that uses the partitions. So yes, if you have a situation when you have installer on more than one partition, you should have a look att LVM. It isn't that hard to understand actually. Volume group are same has a hard disk.

As of the LVM in Debian stretch (9.0), namely 2.02.168-2, it's possible to do a copy of a logical volume across volume groups using a combination of vgmerge, lvconvert, and vgsplit. Since a move is a combination of a copy and a delete, this will also work for a move.

It tells me the partition is in use by LVM volume group. When I try to delete the volume group it tells me it can't because 1 or more logical volumes may be in use. It's showing me 0 Free Physical Volumes, 2 Used PVs, 1 VG and 0 Logical Volumes. I do see that the VG consists of 2 PVs - /dev/sda2 and unknown.

LVM can be set up after the system is installed. But putting the root partition on the LVM after the fact is quite difficult and probably would be better done with a reinstallation. Furthermore, it is not possible to just create a LVM on a already mounted partition. But it seems that the main goal is to provide some space on a LVM for Xen domains.

Jan 11, 2017 · This is why I think I can tell my Ubuntu OS that the computer has one volume group, managed by LVM, and that group will be made up of the 500GB SSD and 4TB HHD. I am hoping that when I look at my computer's properties it will display the sum of these drive's storage. So, I first installed Ubuntu by erasing the disk and using LVM on the 500GB SSD.
