
LNER Encyclopedia: The Z5 (GNSR Y) 0-4-2T Locomotives of the LNER
The Z5 (GNSR Y) Manning Wardle 0-4-2T Shunters. From its formation, the GNSR wanted to use locomotives to work traffic at Aberdeen Docks, but the Harbour Commissioners would only allow horse haulage. In 1915, an agreement was made and the GNSR purchased these two locomotives from Manning, Wardle & Co to work the docks.

They passed to the London and North Eastern Railway at the 1923 grouping, and received the LNER classification Z5. The Class X were later reclassified Z4.

There is some evidence that the LNER initially reserved the letter 'Z' for miscellaneous locomotives. Z1 and Z2 were probably reserved for two GNR departmental locomotives, and Z3 was kept as a spare. Z4 was then allocated to the three GER Stratford 0-6-0T crane engines, and Z5 was used for two types

The GNoSR Classes X and Y were two similar classes of 0-4-2T steam locomotives built by Manning Wardle for the Great North of Scotland Railway. They passed to the London and North Eastern Railway at the 1923 grouping, and received the LNER classification Z5. The class X were later reclassified Z4.
