This section of the LNER Encyclopedia describes all of the locomotive classes to serve with the LNER. The LNER would often denote major modifications with a slash. E.g. B16/2 is a modified B16. Occasionally such modifications would be so substantial that a completely new class number would be given (eg. an A3 is a modified A1).
J50 68890 – 68991, 10 – 16 0-6-0T GNR & LNER Gresley
These Gresley designed locomotives became known as Ardsley Tanks. The locomotives introduced in 1913 were designed for working the steeply graded lines in the West riding and were allocated to Ardsley, Bradford and Copley Hill. They were introduced in 1922 as the GNR J23 class and were designed for freight and shunting duties.

The LNER existed between 1923 and 1947. It was formed in the aftermath of the 1914-18 War by grouping seven leading companies that operated railways along the eastern side of the island of Great Britain. The centenary of its creation is 2023.
GNR Class J23 - Wikipedia
On the GNR, both varieties were classified J23, but the LNER divided them into J51 with smaller boilers, and J50 with larger boilers. [ 5 ] They were unsuperheated, although the prototype J51 (3167) was fitted with a 16-element Robinson superheater as a trial.
