
LB&SCR E2 class - Wikipedia
The London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (LB&SCR) E2 class was a class of 0-6-0 T steam locomotives designed by Lawson Billinton, intended for shunting and short distance goods trains. Ten examples were built between 1913 and 1916.

2-4-0 tender locomotives were an evolutionary step in express passenger design, coming after the 'Singles' (eg. 2-2-2s and 4-2-2s) but before the 4-4-0s ('Americans'). The development of the express passenger 2-4-0 depended on the ability to make steel connecting rods that were strong enough for high speed running.

They passed to the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) in 1923 and both classes were re-classified D7. During the early years of the LNER (before 1928), the D7s qualified for the LNER's green passenger locomotive livery.
