The GER Class D81 was a class of twenty-five 0-6-0 steam locomotives designed by A. J. Hill for the Great Eastern Railway. The all passed to the London and North Eastern Railway at the 1923 grouping and received the classification J20.

Hill's Class D81 (LNER J20) is usually considered the ultimate in traditional Great Eastern Railway (GER) goods engine design. The GER already had forty two ROD 2-8-0 (LNER O4) locomotives on loan from the Government working on the Cambridge line.

One of his designs utilised the S69/B12 boiler on an 0-6-0 chassis which became class D81 (LNER class J20) and at that time was the most powerful class of locomotives of that wheel arrangement in Britain.
D81 - GER Society
The class became numbers 4675-4699 under the LNER renumbering scheme of 1946, and they were withdrawn from the end of 1959 onwards. Four remained at work in September 1962 when steam power came to end on the GE section.

Mar 24, 2021 · This 1920 GER Class D81 design by Hill was re-classified as Class J20 by the LNER. 25 had been built in 3 batches at Stratford works. The 0-6-0 Class 5 freight engines were then rebuilt between 1943 and 1956.
