The London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) Thompson Class L1 was a class of 2-6-4T steam locomotives designed by Edward Thompson. The prototype no. 9000 was built in 1945, but the remaining 99 were built under British Railways jurisdiction between 1948–1950.

Thirty of these new L1 locomotives were authorised in April 1944, and the first locomotive (No. 9000) was completed in May 1945. This was the only tank engine built by the LNER that was painted in lined apple-green livery.

Nov 24, 2010 · I think what may be confusing about the original L1s in LNER lined green livery is that 9000 used the traditional shaded gold transfers while 9001-3 used the Yellow Gill Sans LNER and number.
