Locomotive numbers were 4801, 4802, 4803, 8400, 8401, and 8402. Class members of the designation Y1/2 were purchased between 1927 and 1933. Totalling 16 in number, these are probably the closest to a "standard Y1".

The GCR 9F locos were reclassified as N5 under the LNER locomotive numbering and classification system when the GCR was absorbed into the London & North Eastern Railway after the 1923 grouping. It was the first design for a British railway to use the Belpaire firebox .

May 4, 2020 · The LNER purchased similar units and classified these as class Y1 starting with Sentinel WN 6170/1925 which carried running number 8400. Many of this initial batch were employed aservice locomotives, such as No. 8401 at the Lowestoft sleeper depot and No. 44 at the Faverdale Wagon works.

The Y1s featured a “one speed” gearbox, whilst the Y3s were “two speed” which enabled the latter to work at either shunting or trip-working speeds. The class had the advantage of being able to raise steam much faster than locomotives with conventional boilers.
