45337 entered service as 5337 in 1937 following being built at Armstrong Whitworth at Newcastle-on-Tyne at a cost to the LMS of £6,244. It was later numbered 45337 following nationalisation of the railways and the formation of British Railways in 1948.

This locomotive was built in 1937 for the London Midland and Scottish railway company (LMS), as a Mixed Traffic Class 5 loco. In the early days of the introduction of this class, it is understood that they were known as “Black Stanier’s”.

The ex LMS Black Five No. 45337 has now left the Llangollen Railway and has been relocated to its long-time home the East Lancashire Railway at Bury in Lancashire for overhaul.

Dec 23, 2015 · Built for the LMS in 1937 by Armstrong Whitworth as '5337'. Became '45337' under British Railways. Withdrawn in 1963 and one of five of the type to end up at the famous Barry Scrapyard. She sat there for 20 years before being bought privately for preservation.
