Le Mans Prototypes were created by the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO). The technical requirements for an LMP include bodywork covering all mechanical elements of the car. As of 2023, there are two classes within Le Mans Prototypes, designated LMP2 and LMP3.

The following are a list of Le Mans Prototypes (LMP) race cars, running today, and in the past. This does not include DPi, LMH and LMDh cars, as they appear in lists contained in their own articles. (Note: Some car chassis may have raced in multiple LMP classes through its lifetime or through different setups by teams.

The Cadillac Northstar LMP are a series of Le Mans Prototypes built by Cadillac for use in the American Le Mans Series as well as an attempt to return Cadillac to the 24 Hours of Le Mans since they first entered in 1950. The Northstar LMPs were named after the Northstar V8 engines which powered them.

Le Mans Prototype 900 (LMP900) – These were the purpose built race cars powered by a 6.0-litre normally aspirated or 4.0-litre turbocharged engine. The cars could weigh no less than 900-kilograms. Audi, BMW and Cadillac entered two factory supported cars.

While Dutch race car designer Wiet Huidekoper doesn't have the name recognition of say Tony Southgate or even Nigel Stroud, the cars he's designed certainly do; Lola T92/10, Porsche 911 GT1-98, the Dallara LMP1, and the Porsche 9R3 LMP900; the stillborn Porsche LMP from 1999-2000. Our focus here is decidedly that car.

Following Dallara's work in constructing the Toyota GT-One in 1998, Audi R8R in 1999, and Audi R8 in 2000, the company decided to use their expertise to develop their own Le Mans Prototype for the LMP900 class in 2001, specifically for use by customer teams as an alternative to the factory-backed efforts.
