Why do AMD use PGA instead of LGA - Reddit
PGA has more contact surface than LGA so you need fewer pins for power delivery. You can fit more LGA on a socket, so once your memory channels and PCI-e lanes go up, LGA is easier. PGA also keeps the mainboard vendors happy as the RMA rate for the CPU connection is not an issue for the mainboard vendors with PGA. (Unlike LGA)
What's the difference between LGA, BGA, and PGA sockets?
Aug 29, 2015 · LGA is Land Grid Array. PGA is Pin Grid Array. BGA is Ball Grid Array. LGA is what you're going to get right now. The CPU has metal contacts flush on the surface, pins in the socket. PGA is the other way around. The pins are on the chip. BGA is for CPUs that will be soldered into place (think laptops and consoles).

Is there a practical reason Intel uses LGA and AMD uses PGA or is …
Oct 20, 2021 · For high pin counts LGA is more convenient. Functionality is the same. There's nothing proprietary about it It's more of a traditional thing that AMD has kept using PGA on their AMx platforms while Intel uses LGA. AMD is already using LGA for Threadripper and Epyc, and will abandon PGA completely when they launch AM5 with LGA next year
Let's settle this debate once and for all, LGA or PGA?
Mar 27, 2023 · Less hassle with returns and bent pins and warranties and etc etc means better dividends for me. You make investments into companies, the last thing you want is for the consumers to easily run into issues where the product can be damaged. Going LGA put more of the burden onto the board manufacturers.
