With the exception of the L98A2, the SA80 system is a selective fire gas-operated design that uses ignited powder gases bled through a port in the barrel to provide the weapon's automation.

Cadet GP Rifle (GP - General Purpose) is the advanced rifle used by the Army, Navy and Air Cadet shooting. This weapon was introduced alongside the SA80 from 1989 onwards for cadet use, as at the time cadets were only allowed to fire semi-automatic weapons.

The L98A1 Rifle is a full-calibre (.223" or 5.56mm), non self-loading modified version of the "Individual Weapon" L85A1 and A2 - SA80 Service rifles for Cadet and training use. The action can only be cycled manually by use of the cocking lever.
