Jan 17, 2024 · The L2A1/C2A1 was a variant of the L1A1/C1A1 Self-Loading Rifle meant to serve as a light machine gun in a support role. The L2A1/C2A1 had a heavy barrel, squared front sight, a handguard that doubles as a foldable bipod and a larger 30-round magazine.

L2A1 production was approximately 10,000 rifles produced between 1962 and 1982. Lithgow exported a large number of L1A1 rifles to many countries in the region. Among the users were New Zealand, Singapore and Papua New Guinea.

These PNG contract rifles were designated 'Rifle 7.62mm L1A1/F1'. Records indicate less than 500 were produced. Another 500 standard L1A1's were returned from Papua New Guinea to Lithgow for FTR (factory thorough repair) and these were also fitted with the shorter flash eliminator at this time.

Apr 21, 2021 · It has a 21” heavy barrel and a distinct folding bipod with wooden panels that act as handguard when the bipod is folded up. Doctrinally, the L2A1 was intended to be used in semiauto most of the time, with the bipod and heavy barrel allowing greater sustained semiauto fire than a standard rifle.

Dec 27, 2000 · I've sent you a picture of the L2A1 for comparison. Pay particular attention to the different rear sight systems. I hope this clarifies any confusion. Both pics shown on the board (blue background & Tan background are both L2A1 configurations!)... so it's a bit hard to compare or pay close attention to the differences.
