Kosrae (/ k oʊ ˈ ʃ aɪ / koh-SHY), formerly known as Kusaie or Strong's Island, is an island in the Caroline Islands archipelago, and state within the Federated States of Micronesia. It includes the main island of Kosrae and a few nearby islands and islets, the most significant of which (Lelu Island) is inhabited by 1,500 people.

Kosrae is volcanic in origin and hilly, rising to 2,064 feet (629 meters) at Mount Finkol (Crozier). Fertile and well-watered, Kosrae produces taro, oranges, breadfruit, and bananas and has valuable stands of timber.

The Kosrae crake or Kusaie Island crake (Zapornia monasa), sometimes also stated as Kittlitz's rail, is an extinct bird from the family Rallidae. It occurred on the island of Kosrae and perhaps on Ponape in the south-western Pacific which belong both to the Caroline Islands.

Kosrae has been described as an unblemished garden of flowers, palms and citrus trees. The air is fresh on Kosrae and adventure beckons those wanting to truly get away from it all. Steeped in the history of many decades, the island invites exploration.

Kosrae, formerly known as Kusaie, is the second largest island in the F.S.M. with 42 square miles and a population of 7,700. Like Pohnpei, it is a lush, mountainous island, but with younger, sharper peaks.

Kosrae is the easternmost of the Caroline Islands. Until 1977, most maps identified it as “Kusaie” but the inhabitants have always known it as “Kosrae.” The island is now one state of the Federated States of Micronesia.
