In the meantime, the railway operates only as far as Nekomata Station (see map below). The Kurobe Gorge (黒部峡谷, Kurobe Kyōkoku) is a beautiful, forested ravine in the rugged mountains of the Northern Japan Alps. Cut by the Kurobe River, it is one of the deepest gorges in Japan.

From June 26 to October 15, you can enjoy the powerful sight of water discharged at Kurobe Dam. Climb up the long stairway to the observatory to be rewarded with panoramic views of the dam and Lake Kurobe below.

Kurobe Dam spans across Kurobe Lake in an arc, and it can be accessed via electric bus from the east or the cablecar from the west. Visitors walk over the dam to get between the bus and cablecar stations in about 10-15 minutes.

Enjoy a leisurely walk along this mountain path beside the lake. The route crosses a suspension bridge in addition to a paved promenade and sloped sections. The 3-kilometer course takes about 1 hour to walk. Proceeding further along the path you will find a large 800- or 1,000-year-old tree, also named “Kurobe”.

This is Japan’s biggest arch type dam costing a huge 51.3 billion yen and requiring the total work of 10 million people to build over seven years. 10 cubic meters of water are emitted every second from the 186-meter-high dam that is Japan’s tallest.
