Mar 6, 2025 · I am not a tube roller but have been happy with my Sovtek EL84’s (not M) for years in a couple of P/P amps. Tried JJ’s, didn’t seem as warm as the Sovteks to my ears. Could be just my taste. I buy matched quads from a reputable eBay seller.

Nov 7, 2008 · The Dynaco ST-35 EL84 pp power amp is (arguably) the best-sounding Dyna product of all in anything like stock form. The SCA-35 integrated isnt' bad either; midrange is excellent, but it's not up to the sound quality of my HF-81 (at any rate) at the ends of the spectrum (based on my 16 ohm Valencias).

Dec 27, 2024 · Out of the Kondo range I was highly impressed with Kondo Souga on RCA set of tubes. It had sparkle, liquidy and smoothnes like nothing else I heard. Ongaku was boring for me, noninvolving. For music recorded till the end of 70s I would say that a smartly restored Scott 299A with EL84 tubes can sound outstanding well. Jul 22, 2023 · For modern, have you tried the JJ EL84? There are a lot of good NOS EL84 tubes. I like black plate Sylvania 6BQ5 (especially the red lettered ones). GE and RCA made very good 6BQ5. Philips Miniwatt and Mullard EL84, for good examples of European-made tubes. Telefunken EL84. Get those smokey mullards. So good. But it's fun looking at this thread.
