Philippine Comics (Filipino: Komiks) have been popular throughout the nation from the 1920s to the present. Comics scholar John A. Lent posited that the Philippine comics tradition has "the strongest audience appeal, best-known cartooning geniuses, and most varied comics content" in Asia after Japan and Hong Kong .

Aug 7, 2017 · The first issue of Pilipino Komiks hit the streets on June 14, 1947, with initial print of 10,000 copies. Published fortnightly, at 25 centavos a copy, Pilipino Komiks was easily affordable even to the man on the street and the first issues were sold out.

Feb 14, 2022 · Partially, the PH comics or “komiks” was inspired by American mainstream comic strips and comic books in the early 20th century. The origin komiks rose to prominence during the Spanish–American War.

However, mainstream komiks would not appear again until the 1920’s, when Liwayway Magazine first published Mga Kabalbalan ni Kenkoy, written by Romualdo Ramos and illustrated by Tony Velasquez, pioneers of the modern Philippine comic industry.

It can be traced back to early precursors such as Trajan's Column, in Rome, Egyptian hieroglyphs and the Bayeux Tapestry. The earliest examples of humans using illustration for storytelling purposes goes back to cave paintings over 50,000 years ago. [1] .

The approach is diachronic even the study focuses on firstly, the beginnings of the comics in the late 1920s, and subsequently, on the stories that the komiks magazines delivered to millions of in the post-war years and into the 1990s.

Edited by Ben Cabailo, Jr., the Silangan Komiks' first issue appeared on March 15, 1950, and was afterwards published on a regular forthnightly basis. It boasted some of the youngest and most talented Filipino illustrators at the time: Nestor Redondo, Alfredo Alcala, Nolasco "Noly" Panaligan, Elpidio Torres, and Antonio de Zuniga.
