Kokura Castle (小倉城, Kokurajō) was built in 1602 at the beginning of the Edo Period. The castle was destroyed by fire in 1866, and the current castle tower is a ferro-concrete reconstruction from 1959.

Kokura Castle was built on a plateau in the center of Kitakyushu City, making it very convenient for transportation. It is exceptionally popular with visitors. One reason is that famed swordmaster Miyamoto Musashi stayed in Kokura.

The Kokura Castle built by Tadaoki Hosokawa was part of an ambitious urban plan that incorporated the entire castle town within its fortifications. It was the fifth-largest castle in Japan and, in western Japan, rivaled even Himeji Castle in scale.
