Head. A killer whale has an indistinct rostrum (snout-like projection). A single blowhole on top of the head is covered by a muscular flap. A killer whale breathes through its blowhole. The blowhole is relaxed in a closed position, and the flap provides a water-tight seal. To open its blowhole, a killer whale contracts the muscular flap.

The orca (Orcinus orca), or killer whale, is a toothed whale and the largest member of the oceanic dolphin family. The only extant species in the genus Orcinus , it is recognizable by its black-and-white patterned body.

Several weeks ago, K21, the oldest male killer whale (orca) in the Southern Resident community, was photographed and videoed in a state of severe emaciation, showing an extreme version of what killer whale researchers sometimes refer to as “peanut head.”

They’re commonly known as the Killer whale. But the Orca isn’t actually a whale: it’s in the dolphin family. And while it shares a lot of the same characteristics of dolphins, the Orca has some unique features that are all its own, like its camouflage coloring.

Head and body length: Males up to 9.8m. Females up to 8.5m. Eight tonnes of pure power whacks an ice floe floating in cold Arctic waters. The seal lying on top of the ice doesn’t stand a chance. Knocked into the sea, the seal becomes a meal for one of the ocean’s top predators – the huge killer whale!

With its stocky body (broad in girth relative to length) and powerful musculature, the killer whale (Orcinus orca) is amongst the most robust of all the cetaceans. It's head is rounded and tapers to a conical snout with a blunt, indistinct beak.
