That the seven times Kobashi did the Burning Hammer stand as pinnacles in not only his career but also wrestling as a medium of creative expression is ofc w/o question, but knowing how it all ended for Misawa will always make for a nagging discomfort watching esp those first three bumps where he just lands on his head.

Jul 20, 2022 · Genuinely a legendary run. Others have been longer, but none as consistently great as Kobashi’s run as GHC champ. You couldn’t have paid a soul to boo him. Maybe the greatest world title run in modern wrestling, and there might not be another that’s close in the last 20 years. We pay homage to Kenta Kobashi in this household.

My personal favorite moment of this match is a small one: Kobashi is pouring on the chops and Misawa is on his knees up against the ropes when one chop to the neck from Kobashi causes Misawa to whip his head up, his trademark stoicism dropping for a moment (crowd even gives out a gasp to acknowledge this) and precedes to give Kobashi a proper elbow-ing and takes …
