Chao (チャオ Chao) is a popular character in the Unico series and appears in both manga and anime. When Unico is being mistreated by farm animals, Chao helps him out. The two become friends and adventure together.

Unico is a young, innocent male unicorn who possesses a special ability to bring happiness to anyone near him. The story begins in ancient Greece with a young mortal girl named Psyche. She is the first friend to Unico, and is apparently so beautiful that the goddess Venus becomes jealous.

The next creature Unico encounters is Chao (Katy), a black-and-white cat who dreams of becoming a witch. Katy and Unico befriend a lonely old woman, whom Katy mistakenly believes is a witch and will teach her some magic as well as transform her into a human girl.

Unico is a baby boy unicorn with light blue or white fur, a pink mane, a white tail, orange hooves, and little cinnamon bun-shaped ears. He has the natural gift of making other creatures lighthearted and happy.

In the 1981 movie, Unico discovers Katy playing in a field of flowers instead of taking care of Granny. He calls her out on her selfishness and tries telling her that "He turned Katy into a human girl.

Stumbling in the New Form: Chao/Chow note (known as Katy in the English Dub of the 1981 film) gets turned into a human girl that was secretly granted by Unico. Due to being a cat, she briefly has trouble standing on two legs, which causes her to react with pure happiness and the amusement of Unico.

Katy/Chao is the Cat befriends Unico after the West Wind whisks him away from the Isle of Solitude. Abandoned and having no family, She wants to be human so she can become a witch. When Unico grants her wish, she discovers the thrill—and dangers—of being a real girl.
