What was the point of that? What was actually going on? Why would she knock him out and force him into the battle just for him to wake up anyway? Am I missing something?

For your other question, she kisses Tavros, but he, quite obviously, doesn't return it. Vriska has psychic abilities where she can control certain troll's minds (Tavros, Sollux [half of the time], and Karkat, that we know of).
