Ka‘aha is located on the southern coastline of the park, 3.6 miles from the trailhead at the end of Hilina Pali road. The hike begins with a steep downhill trail that switches back 24 times to the base of the pali (cliff). Along the trail you will be hiking through mostly non-native grasses dotted with native ‘ōhi‘a trees.

Located on the Big Island in Volcanoes National Park (VNP), the trail to Ka'aha is one of several backcountry adventures available in VNP's vast wilderness. This trek begins down a series of swtichbacks as you descend towards the beautiful Ka'u coastline.

Remote, enchanting Kaaha is the nearest to a road of four backcountry camps on the Kau seacoast of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Hiking there via the Hilina Pali and Kaaha trails is still a challenge, given the sun and wind exposure on Kilauea’s mostly barren south flanks.
