Lawrence " Kris " Parker (born August 20, 1965), better known by his stage names KRS-One (/ ˌkeɪɑːrɛsˈwʌn /; an abbreviation of "Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everyone" [1]) and Teacha, is an American rapper from the Bronx.

Young Lawrence dreamed of becoming a graffiti artist and MC. His mother preached African history and spiritualism pushing them to excel in school. Continuing differences of opinion, at 16 KRS left home to live on the streets, this was in 1981.

When his mother remarried in 1970 and had two more children, a son and a daughter, KRS took the new family name and became Lawrence Kris Parker. Growing up in poverty, KRS left home in his early teens and lived on the streets of the Bronx as hip-hop culture began to emerge.

KRS One is viewed as the embodiment of the philosophical, sociological and political worldview espoused originally by those that participate in Hip Hop’s culture. He is presently one of the most outspoken leaders of Hip Hop’s politics and tradition.
