Bolts meeting SAE J429 standards have radial lines engraved on the bolt head. Grade 2, 5, and 8 are the most common grades of fasteners according to the Society of Automotive Engineers standard.

This document provides procedures for tightening and loosening flange bolts on pipes and vessels. It outlines cleaning and lubricating bolts, inserting gaskets, and tightening bolts in a specific sequence to evenly compress gaskets. Bolts should be tightened in pairs opposite each other and worked around the flange.
