Feb 14, 2023 · I've got my eye on an israeli mauser k98 chambered in 7.62x51. Does anyone have any experience running 308 through one of these? My research so far suggests that the mauser action is strong enough to manage the higher pressure of 308 even if it's not what's stamped on the rifle, but I'm still fairly cautious.

Mar 4, 2021 · There is a big difference, as ex-mil rifle cambered to fire 7.62x51 NATO are usually not chambered or proofed to fire commercial .308 ammo which can be a lot hotter. So, trying to find a 7.62x51 NATO ex-milsurp Mauser may not be that beneficial to you if you can only get US commercial .308 ammo.

Apr 10, 2020 · I've not had a .308 or similar length cartridge in a long action, but there should not be a problem feeding. Remember that the Mauser bolt is a controlled round feed, so the cartridge should not be loose in the action.

Jun 14, 2010 · I would second looking for an existing converted Izzy K98. For starters, you won't damage the resale value of your Mauser and you will own another k98 with a bit of history. You can find the 308 K98s on the gunbroker or gunamerica for a reasonable price.

Nov 19, 2013 · Got the Nowegian K98 chambered in 308 today, and cleaned and inspected it and it looks like a great piece! if it shoots as good as it looks, I hope to have a real tack driver when shes done. New front and rear sight bases will be mounted.
