Entered in service after the German invasion, she saw active service late during the war. Additionally, K-56 torpedoed and damaged the German merchant Baltenland (3038 GRT) off Poland on 26 December 1944.

All ships were built by Marti Yard / Ordzhinikidze Yard, Leningrad. A total of twelve boats were built in the Baltic for the Soviet Northern Fleet. K1 to K23 were transferred prior to the German Invasion. K51 to K56 were trapped in Leningrad during the Blockade and were completed after the war and transferred to the Arctic.

At 0154 hours on 10 March 1944 the German submarine U-575 attacked convoy SL-150, which was combined with convoy MKS-41 and sank HMS Asphodel (T/Lt. Michael Albert Halliday, RNZNR) with a Gnat torpedo in position 45º24'N, 18º09'W. Only five survivors out of a crew of 97 were picked up by the British corvette HMS Clover.
