Sep 2, 2020 · Brazilian jiu-jitsu has less impact than throws in judo, so Brazilian jiu-jitsu is technically somewhat lower risk than judo. Judo does a lot more throwing and upright grappling, typically in the gi. Brazilian jiu-jitsu does a lot more ground grappling. There are lots of gi schools and plenty of schools have quality no-gi instruction.

But the consensus is that if a Judo Black belt suddenly want to train bjj, with just less than a month of guard passing training, you can probably promote him to blue. Judo is mostly about throws and takedowns. Kung Fu is an umbrella term for any Chinese Martial art. Ninjitsu is about striking pressure points and sensitive areas. Jiu Jitsu is about trapping, locking, takedowns, etc. Tae Kwan Do is about striking and kicking. Aikido is about turning the momentum of the attacks of your opponent.

Any martial art that isn't continuously pressure tested, doesn't have any sparring against a resisting opponent (and no, throwing around a willing uke doesn't count) isn't good for self defense. Boxing, BJJ, Judo, Kickboxing etc. will all mop the floor with aikido unless aikido person also trains something else that actually works.

Old school judo is undoubtedly better for self defense than bjj but since judo became an olympic sport rules made it far less effective. Due to less time on the ground modern judo has limited grappling and submission game and the no leg grab made even the stand up less effective.
