The Junkers Ju 87, popularly known as the " Stuka ", [b] is a German dive bomber and ground-attack aircraft. Designed by Hermann Pohlmann, it first flew in 1935. The Ju 87 made its combat debut in 1937 with the Luftwaffe 's Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War of 1936–1939 and served the Axis in World War II from beginning to end (1939–1945).

Warbird recovery experts recently discovered a Ju 87D Stuka in a very cold freshwater lake in northern Europe! The aircraft has been recovered and acquired for the American Heritage Museum. The Ju-87 Stuka is the iconic dive bomber aircraft used by Axis forces during WWII.

The Ju 87 D-5 was based on the D-3 design and was unique in the Ju 87 series as it had wings 0.6 metres (1 foot) longer than previous variants. The two 7.92 mm MG 17 wing guns were exchanged for more powerful 20 mm MG 151/20s to better suit the aircraft's ground-attack role.

The Ju 87 was produced in several variants, with increasing power, longer range and bomb-lifting capability. The Ju 87A was powered with a 630 hp (470 kW) Junkers Jumo 210D. It was underpowered and really wasn’t a combat ready airplane.
