The Junkers Ju 188 "Rächer" ("Avenger") was a German Luftwaffe high-performance medium bomber built during World War II, the planned follow-up to the Ju 88 with better performance and payload.

The BMW engined Ju 188Es (some of which were fitted with dive brakes) and Jumo powered Ju 188As (which also sported a dorsal cannon in place of the machine-gun and MW50 engine power boosting) were the initial variants - medium bombers with a 3,000 kg (6,600 lbs) bombload.

With Jumo 213E-1 engines 2,050 PS (1,510 kW, 2,020 hp) at take-off and 1,690 PS (1,240 kW, 1,670 hp) at 9,500 m (31,400 ft), the Ju 188T could reach 700 kph (440 mph). Operating at this altitude, the Ju 188S could carry only 800 kg (1,760 lb) of bombs.

The Ju188 was a development of the well-known Ju88 twin engined bomber. The new bomber had wings with increased span and tapered wingtips and a redesigned nose.

Much of the reason for this change of heart was due to threat of advancing British and Russian fighter designs that had put Ju 88 in great threat at every operation, though from the performance standpoint, Ju 188 bombers were only marginally better than their Ju 88 predecessors.

Ju.188 E-1 differed from the pre-production machines initially only in engines, but soon enough they were replaced by BMW-801D-2 or G-2 with takeoff power of 1700hp and 1440hp at an altitude of 5700m. The Ju.188e-2 was a torpedo bomber modeled on the A-3. Several of these machines were produced without the EDL-131 upper turret.
