Originally done for the calendar, Gandalf has travelled a long way since. This painting is emblematic of many things, and I have a lot to say about it, so bear with me!

May 2, 2005 · While in Toronto on an unfamiliar computer, I managed to erase most of the e-mails sent to [email protected] before April 23rd… While this did effectively deal with the spam, I deleted a healthy number of real messages too.

Your illustrations capture the very enchanted feel of Middle Earth when one reads Tolkien, a notable example being the illustrations of Gandalf looking down from a hill onto the Shire.

Spent the week before last running about in front of a film crew, entering stage left and exiting stage right, when it wasn’t the opposite or vice-versa. (The big problem of course being how the heck do you make in any way interesting a guy who spends all his time...

Nov 12, 2003 · Once all the little bits, belts and pouches and bags are done, Gandalf will cinch up his belt and plunge into a glue bath so Oscar can model the movement in his clothing.

Jun 23, 2003 · How cowardly. Ruskin’s ghost would NOT approve…. John Ruskin was born in 1819. A champion of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, he wrote and lectured extensively, and painted exquisite watercolours on his travels. I’d suggest: “Unto This Last: And Other Writings” as a good place to start. It’s available from Penguin, edited by Clive Wilmer.

Jan 9, 2005 · My son and I took the Gandalf statue to be photographed professionally, which entailed driving through Neuchâtel at 12 mph with the flashers on, with him steadying the statue in the backseat, tailgated and generally honked upon by irate local drivers.
