John Gery (born John Roy Octavius Dougherty, June 2, 1953) is an American poet, critic, collaborative translator, and editor. In addition to writing poetry, John is a critic, editor and collaborative translator. He has published a critical book on the nuclearism and contemporary American poetry, a guidebook to Ezra Pound’s Venice (co-authored), and a biography of Armenian poet Hmayeak Shems (co-authored).

A Research Professor of English at the University of New Orleans, Gery is founding Director of the Ezra Pound Center for Literature, Brunnenburg, Italy. He currently serves as Secretary of the Ezra Pound International Conference and Series Editor of The EPCL Book Series at Clemson University Press (distributed by Oxford University Press).

As a critic, editor and collaborative translator, he has a critical book on nuclearism and American poetry, a co-authored guidebook to Ezra Pound’s Venice, and a co-authored biography of Armenian poet Hmayeak Shems.

John Gery has published seven books of poetry, most recently, Have at You Now! (2014). His work has appeared throughout the U.S., Europe, and Canada and has been translated into seven languages. Gery has also published criticism on poets ranging from John Ashbery to Marilyn Chin, as well as a critical book on the nuclear threat and American poetry.
