Joab was a loyal captain in charge for King David and he won lot of battles for his king. He had also risked his life in many occasions for the sake of Kingdom of Israel and David. (2 nd Samuel 2, 10-12) He did make some mistakes, however: He killed Abner who came to reconcile with David. Joab might have felt threatened by this reconciliation.

Joab may even have been the cause of the rebellion on the part of Adonijah. One can easily imagine that Joab told Adonijah all of the details as a way of delegitimizing Solomon as the king of Israel because he was the son of David's ill fated union with Bathsheba.

Mar 27, 2018 · Joab (David’s nephew) then killed his cousin Amasa after David replaced Joab with Amasa as commander of his armies. Joab supported Adonijah’s bid for David’s throne. Before David died, and after David had anointed his son Solomon as king, David got Solomon to promise he would have Joab killed.

When David spurned Joab's objections to taking a census of Israel, Joab thought David's decision was 'abhorrent' (1 Chronicles 21.6). The portrait of Joab in 2 Samuel comes across as a man who is vengeful, resentful, even opportunistic, but still loyal to the House of David. Joab butts heads with David, but he never betrays his king.
